Overview

Kunstmaan I Accenture Interactive partnered with Engie Electrabel to pilot ‘CityGlow’; a tourist city walk to discover the statues and sculptures of Marche-en-Famenne with an app that uses ultrafast Li-Fi technology to teach visitors about Belgium’s cultural heritage.

Li-Fi, or Light-Fidelity, is an innovative technology that allows the transfer of data via light bulbs rather than networking equipment such as routers or Wi-Fi hotspots.

The app is installed on dedicated Li-fi tablets which pick up the Li-Fi lamp’s signal to trigger the release of relevant information. The pilot will test the effect of Li-Fi in an outdoor environment. Future uses for the technology in other environments are on the horizon.

Workflow

As the Lead Designer, I closely worked together with two developers, a copywriter and the client. Firstly I went to Marche-en-Famenne to walk the 1.5 mile tour myself and get a good impression of what the actual experience would be. I also got a taste and idea of what the city is like. After wireframing and getting feedback and validation of the client and the developers, the design was made. We also got a Li-Fi lamp delivered to test this technology, which was pretty unknown to us. After testing design and technology with a small user group, CityGlow was launched with success.
